My Weekly & Memorable People

I'm in My Weekly this week (so exciting). I bought my copy, as usual, and as I flicked through the pages, I came to Page 43 and thought, 'I know her from somewhere", I then noticed the picture of my shed next to the one of the woman's face, and realized (duh) that it was me. Only I can recognize my shed, before a picture of me. There's also a photo of Grumpy, and one of me sitting in the shed (I didn't realize my paperwork was so untidy).

This week started off with tragic news of the death of the youngest Funeral Director in the Island, Alex de Gruchy. He was only in his mid-twenties, when the plane he was piloting on Sunday evening, crashed in the sea off the coast of France (something that happened to my father thirty years ago, but happily, he survived). This wonderful young man was in charge of my grandmother's funeral, four years ago (when he was only 21) he had such a presence and great dignity, especially for one so young, that I couldn't believe his young age.

There are people that make their mark on others lives, and he certainly made his. I can't imagine how many devastated families he helped by making the funeral of a loved one so special. My condolences go to his family and colleagues. He'll be sorely missed by so many in Jersey, but especially by them.

So sad when such a young life ends like that... I agree, it is extraordinary how some people can have such an effect on so many people, in such a short time.
Well done with My Weekly. Will go and get a copy! Page 43, here I come.

That's so tragic:-(

I'm going into town tomorrow. I know what I'll be buying! I bet Grumpy's pleased to be in the magazine:-)

Ladybird - I know, horribly sad. I still can't quite believe it, and I didn't know him that well at all.

Thanks for buying the mag :)

helenmh - I've written all about me!!! Eeek.

So sorry to hear about the young guy :(

Congratulations on the story, I might just break a habit of a lifetime and go buy a magazine :) TFX

Yes, I'm feel heartsore this week (and thank you for your kind words) but it's tragic to hear of anyone dying far too young.

On a happier note I shall hot foot it tomorrow to buy My Weekly!

chrish - I was sorry to read about your aunt. x

Many congratulations on My Weekly -er, but I TOLD you you could do this, didn't I??? - and will buy one first thing in the morning and boast to everyone in the newsagents that I know you (and Grumpy). So very sorry about Alex de Gruchy. Awful news, Debs. Such a bloody waste of a young life and of an obviously caring young man who helped so many others.

Oh no, how awful. I'm sorry to hear that news.

Oh, but you're in My Weekly? Oh... (Do you have a scanner? I would so love to see it...)

Deborah Carr (Debs) said...

chris - thanks, I know, you have always said I could do it, but then you're always lovely.x

It was so sad. He helped so many people and was so mature for his age, dreadful loss to so many.

jj - thanks, it is awful, isnt' it?

I only have the oldest printer in the world. I desperately need something new and clever with a scanner.

Very sad news on one hand but great news about My Weekly - go for it Debs, must go and get a copy!

When I read this today I rushed straight back out to the newsagents and bought a copy. They know me there so I mumbled that it was not my regular reading but that I knew someone who was in it. Its a very good article and a nice magazine. I think I need to start a magazine for young male early retirees (The Potterers' World?) as there doesn't seem to be anything presently in the market equivalent to all these women's mags.
But now I've got Christine Bleakley smiling up at me from my computer desk as well as the delectable Lesley Garrett inside (as well as your good self) - perhaps I'll just stick with My Weekly in future.

Amanda - it is horribly tragic.

Thanks for buying a copy, please ignore the mess in the shed!

carol & chris - it is so dreadful.

Thanks for asking your Mum to buy a copy.

flowerpot - thanks for getting a copy, I've bought a couple :)

east anglian troy - thanks for getting a copy. It does seem a shame that there are so many mags for women and so few for you chaps out there. Maybe you should start one, but you'll probably have enough on your hands with this book project.

OOh, I bought it and there you were! Lovely article. Well done!

Deborah Carr (Debs) said...

ChrisH - thanks very much.

jan - I know, it's awful.

Thanks for the congrats on the My Weekly piece.

lane - thanks so much. It is fairly big, and dreadfully untidy! Grumps does look sweet sitting so proudly on his chair, bless.

Wow Debs, that's really sad news about the young guy. It's odd isn't it? Following your good news in the mag. I'm sure he will be missed by many. But Congrats on getting your picture in the magizine.

Congrats on getting pubbed in My Weekly! I'm pretty sure I got a rejection from them one. *grin*

Sorry to hear about the young man. But it sounds like he touched many lives while he was here and will be remembered.

Well how brilliant. I'll be buy My Weekly tomorrow first thing :)

Debs, congratulations on your article in My Weekly! Is there any chance we can see a pic of inside your shed here on your blog? lol! Yes I am sooo nosy! But i can't get MW out here!

Annieye said...

Congrats Deb and well done! Did they let you know you were going to be in it? Why I ask is that they accepted a story of mine way back in May, paid me for it and then said it would be probably be published in December, but I've heard nothing yet.

Tragic news of the funeral director. That's two people I know who have been touched by tragedy this week. A young girl I work with was a lifelong friend of Boris Reavey who got stabbed to death in Bedford last Saturday. He was only 19 and she spoke to him on the phone only about an hour before he was stabbed.

Flowerpot said...

Just got My Weekly - well done you Debs!

Deborah Carr (Debs) said...

Kaye Manro - It was shocking news to us all over here, he was so well thought of.

Thanks, it was great seeing (well, not my picture) but the piece in the mag.

melissa marsh - thank you, I've been rejected by them before too :)

fiona - thank you, hope you enjoy it.

christina phillips - thanks. I shall post a pic of the inside of the shed sometime soon, it's a dreadful mess, I had thought I'd tidied it a bit before the pic was taken, but obviously not enough!

annieye - I thought they were going to, but it was only because I usually get the mag that I noticed it, though I didn't get it last week, so could have missed it entirely.

What dreadful news about that poor chap being stabbed, the girl you work with must be devastated. It's awful when these senseless things happen.

flowerpot - ooh thanks, so much. x

Really tragic about that young man, unfortunately the most predictable thing in life is its unpredictability.

Bought a copy of My Weekly and have been excitedly telling people, "Look I blog with this lady!" Hopefully it will inspire more people to adopt a shed approach to personal time and space!

michelle - I agree with you, so sad.

Glad you liked my shed, I can't imagine being without it now!

I could not resist peeking into the mag on the supermarket shelf and pointing the article out to the DH who said - 'Nice Shed.'
Praise indeed! LOL
Fame. Are you officially now a local 'celebrity?'

It's so sad when accidents like that happen, but especially when they involve someone so young. He sounds like a special person. The mention of your father put me in mind of Richard Bach who walked away from several crashes...

Not recognising oneself is remarkably easy to do, almost as easy as not recognising one's ex-spouse on the street, while observing that there was something familiar about 'that man over there'. Yes, it happened.

Is My Weekly online? I hope someone scans it for you so those of us who have no hope of getting the mag can see too!

Deborah Carr (Debs) said...

rayanneleutener - glad he likes the shed. Nope, not expecting to be asked onto a reality tv show in the near future!

wordtryst - I wish I could not recognize my ex-husband!

I have a friend who has scanned it but for some reason my computer won't accept the email. Not sure why!
