Regeneration & Wasted
I hope you all had a relaxing weekend. Mine was mainly spent typing up my edits and reading and I finally closed my eyes at 1.15am this morning. Not a good idea when I have to be at work for 8am ready to look at a computer screen all day. However it was a good book - I'll be reviewing it on Novelicious for Little Black Dress Thursday - so I couldn't help myself.
Another great book I've read recently was Regeneration by Pat Barker. My aunt recommended this book to me. It's part of a trilogy and I've now bought the other two books and will read them as soon as I possibly can. You can read my review of this over at Bookersatz. Where you'll also find Helen Hunt's excellent review of Wasted by Nicola Morgan, which is another book I've added to my wish list.
Now that I've accepted this new job, I've been able to cancel my exam, as it would have had no relevance to the work I'll be doing. So, rather than having to fit everything around studying for the next twelve weeks, I can spend more time reading/writing and hopefully getting a little sleep. What a relief.

Yey to more reading and writing time - and definitely to more sleep! (I was up at about four am scraping a dead vole off the bedroom floor, thanks to cats!)
helen - Oh eugh! I have to admit that did make me giggle. Mind you I'd be horrified if I had to do it. Pets. Sometimes I wonder why we love them so much.
Oh, do try reading Union Street and/or Blow Your house Down by Pat Barker. Two very good reads indeed :-) Enjoy your free time TDx
Big yay to sleep!
I'm reading Nicola's Wasted right now, and I'm really enjoying it. Highly recommended!
(PS - Looking forward to meeting you at the RNA conference!)
Ooooh no more studying, that sounds nice :)
More reading and writing time! That can be a really good thing. I do hope you're going to like your new job, Debs.
Congratulations on your new job. That's excellent news Debs!
Are you going on Thursday, Debs?
Must have another stab at the Regeneration trilogy. Am ashamed to say it hasn't taken with me before.
I looooved the Regeneration trilogy, and several of Pat Barker's other books too - 'The Century's Daughter' is a particular favourite. She's an awesome writer. And thanks for alerting me to the review of Wasted on Bookersatz, I've got the book and have been trying to avoid finding out any more about it until I've read it for myself, which is quite difficult because it seems to be all over the Internet! Great news about the exam, I bet it feels as if you've got your life back.
I'm a bit late but ... massive Congratulations on your new job, Debs. P xxx
tf - thanks for the tip, I'll have to have a look at these books.
talli - Wasted does look good, I'll have to read it.
The conference will be fun and there's always so much going on.
dj - it sounds perfect and such a relief.
kaye - me too. I'll be glad to get the first week out of the way.
lane - thanks very much. It was a lovely surprise to get it.
chris - I'm not going on Thursday, unfortunately. I would have loved to. Can't wait to hear all about it.
queenie - I must look up Pat Barkers other books too and definitely read Wasted.
I do feel relieved not to have the thought of spending the next 12 weeks studying.
phillipa - thank you.
So glad the exam is off the table! definitely more time for rest and relaxation... :)))
I just LOVE Blazing Saddles; I too watch with baited breath and a giggle forthcoming. Candygram for Mongo...
Pat Barker has been on my to read list for ever. I can't think why I haven't got round to her as I love that period.
And I've just started Wasted!
Writing, reading and sleep sound just what you need Debs. Good for you! I love Pat Barker - what a talented writer.
Congrats on the new job. Looking forward to your review.
Must be a relief to have some extra time you weren't expecting. Enjoy it.

anna - lol, dear Mongo!
Yes, it's a relief to be able to forget the exam, and dump those large lever arch files.
jj - I just wish I had more time to read all these books. So many books, so little time...
flowerpot - me too, I was thrilled to have discovered her (by way of my clever aunt).
lilys - thanks very much.
suzanne - it certainly is.
I have to admit I've never stayed up late to scrape a dead vole off the floor... strange how that image leaps off the page...
Every day I say I'm going to get to bed early (early being before 1am) but I never manage it. I have to be up around 7 for work. Not much beauty sleep there. No wonder it was a nightmare when my publisher decided to put a photo of me in my new book. The ones I had (not quite as repulsive as dead vole, but I do NOT photograph well...) were too small so I rushed into work, eyes stuck open with matchsticks, and with 5 minutes to spare 'charmed' (ha!) a colleague into snapping at me, er, sorry, snapping me...
Moral of tale: Must get to bed earlier. (Only now I'll probably have nightmares about stepping on dead voles...)
leigh - this made me laugh as it sounds just like me. I'm sitting here now at 23.52 (which is far later than I would normally be at the computer to be honest) but I was so tired this morning and really should be in bed.
Many congratulations on the new job!
Yes, I think Pat Barker is a v. skilled and intelligent writer.
susie - many thanks. I'm a little nervous, but think it should be interesting.
I'm looking forward to reading the next two in the trilogy.
Congratulations on your new job. That's excellent news Debs!
