Cuckoo Review & Prom Dresses

I've just finished reading Julia Crouch's debut novel, Cuckoo and you can find my review over at Bookersatz. Please go and have a look and let me know what you think.

Good luck to fellow RNA member, Janice Horton who's book Bagpipes & Bullshot is being launched today. To find out more about the book, links to interviews with Rosemary Gemmell, Liz Fenwick and Anita Burgh, to enter a one day competition (1st April only) to win one of two Kindle beach protectors, or simply just to learn how to make a Bullshot, please go to Janice's blog here

My daughter has her prom in June and I've been saying for a few months that we really should start looking for a dress. Sas is an enthusiastic shopper - as my credit cards can verify - but she hasn't found anything she liked enough so far. Unfortunately, living in Jersey, there are only so many shops that you can buy suitable dresses from and when all your friends and other local schools are holding proms, trying to find something no-one else has is a little difficult.

Anyway, after hours (and I mean hours and hours and hours) of searching online, debate and disappointment that the colour she wanted etc wasn't available, I'm hoping (crossing everything, even toes, well attempting to) that we may now have one ordered. When I was her age, the only prom dresses I ever came across were the ones in the film Grease. I'd have loved to go to a prom.

I told her she'll need to wear heels, which isn't something she's ever done and when she tried on a pair of mine she looked worried and said, "Mum I don't think this looks right." "Why ever not?" I asked. "Because my legs look far too long like this." I took a deep breath (never having been lucky enough to possess a pair of endless legs) and explained that having long legs is not something most people worry about. Sigh. Right, now we just have to start looking for the shoes...

PS Have just received confirmation that the dress will be on its way to us mid-April. Phew!

I enjoyed your review, Debs, though it certainly sounds quite a dark, unsettling storyline! Good luck with the prom dress.

Yay for finding a prom dress! Would you believe I still have the dress I wore to my junior year prom? It was handmade by a local gal and I just can't part with it even though I will NEVER be able to wear it. Maybe my daughter will think it's "cool" and wear it someday! ;-)

I have daughter envy! It wasn't quite the same sorting my sons suit out last year for his prom. I bet she looks gorgeous.

Off to see the review
now.

rosemary - thanks you. I think we've sorted out the prom dress problem now, which is a huge relief.

melissa - you're so lucky to have had a prom. I always wanted to attend one, but the only ones I came across were in american movies.

chris - thanks for reading my review.

We've now got to find shoes and accessories for the dress... and on it goes.

Bluestocking mum - I can't wait to see her all dressed up.

Thanks for reading the review.x

I enjoyed your review, Debs, and you and Karen have renewed my interest in the book. I have to admit that I kept asking myself why she doesn't just throw the woman out of her house, when things start to go so horribly wrong?

Being vertically-challenged, I'm relieved that we never had a prom when I was still at school and that I'm not at school now that all the girls seem to be so much taller.

I hope the dress is as beautiful as your daughter sounds and that she has a ball at the prom! Although, she probably shouldn't go in for that leaving one glass slipper behind nonsense...

Hope we get to see it!

I've just posted a review of Cuckoo at mine too, Debs :o)

Good luck with the prom dress - disappointingly my daughter has admitted since that she wasn't happy with hers!

How exciting for Sas! I remember those shopping trips with Jay; that girl could try on dresses all day long! :)))

kath - thanks for saying you enjoyed my review.

I must admit I'd be delighted to have longer legs like my daughter, I've no idea who she's inherited those from!

susie - yes, definitely.

karen - I'll pop over to read it.

Such a shame she wasn't happy with it, I hope she had fun anyway.

anna - I can't get over how she can shop, my feet will probably never recover!

talli - I'll post a picture of the dress as soon as I'm allowed to. Her Ladyship is keeping it secret from her friends at the moment :-)
