Exploring Bunkers with Grumps

Here's a picture of Grumps on one of our walks last weekend. He's lucky to have many different areas to go for his walks thanks to a couple of nearby beaches, a beautiful valley walk around a nearby dam and also the sand dunes down in St Ouens Bay.

This is one of our favourite walks. He particularly enjoys wandering around the bunkers - again in St Ouens Bay - to sniff out the rabbits and generally be a little snooty towards other dogs. I, on the other hand, love wandering around there - as well as Noirmont, another bunker-filled area - to study the bunkers and to think through plot strands for my WiP. It's more pleasant when the weather is warm and sunny, but I particularly enjoy these walks in gloomier weather because the atmosphere helps my imagination so much more when there seems to be the threat of a storm coming across the channel.

Do you have a favourite place where you go for inspiration?

Anywhere for a walk, but it as a photographer I look for inspiration, not being a writer.

Lindylou - I love taking photos and find they inspire me to write too.

I love taking long walks, but haven't done so for awhile because of my arthritic feet - and because it is now dark by the time I get off of work. There is a beautiful park right across the street from me and a lovely walking path that takes me through some gorgeous scenery. I've worked through several plot snarls while taking walks!

melissa - I must admit I prefer the summer months when the days are lighter for longer. How lovely living across from a park, although it must be frustrating not being able to walk there as much as you'd like.

Great photo, Debs. I love exploring at the weekend with my husband and we often go for long walks by the shore or, more recently, over at various parts of Loch Lomond - and that's great for my own research!

rosemary - thank you. I've never been to Loch Lomond but it's one of my closest friend's favourite place and she visits there often with her husband. It sounds incredible.

What an inspiring place! And lovely to see Grumps getting in on the act :-)

My favourite place for inspiration is down by the sea with the waves smashing onto the beach :-) x

Anywhere different Debs. I'm sure some people find South London different, and it inspires them. But I've found every recent holiday I've had, Italy, Singapore, France will inspire something, particularly if we're staying in an old house with some history. There are some very spooky old bunkers at Harwich/Dovercourt in Essex where I would not walk late at night - with or without Grumps!

Cara - I'm also inspired by trips to new places too and would mind visiting those bunkers in Essex. I'm going to have to find out more about them.

I'm lucky - we also have some lovely walks on our doorstep. Sadly, no Grumps to keep me company, though. :0( xx

Oh how I miss walks! I can go on some great urban walks, but it's not really the same.

Hi to Grumps! :)

Because I am writing fantasy / adventure books fro children at the moment I have to go to my dreams for inspiration...though I do have a scene which needs me to visit some ruined castles soon. Seeing as I have just had major surgery that will have to be done online. Lovely photo of Divadog, I can SO see him being snooty to other dogs, so funny!

That looks lovely Debs. Funnily enough I've just been writing up a walk on the north coast and pics on my blog about it - it is fabulous there. So inspiring.

Don't those bunkers make you feel claustrophobic, too?

Teresa - sorry, I must have missed your comment somehow. I love walking along the beach especially when the waves are crashing against the sand. Inspirational, indeed.

suzanne - he's adorable, but can be a bit of a pain sometimes, lol.

talli - oh I don't know, urban walks can be fascinating, especially around London. I love discovering new things when I'm walking.

dj - glad you're on the mend. You're right, dreams are a great way to find inspiration.

flowerpot - I love reading about your walks, they sound so fascinating.

jenny - yes, they can a bit, but I think we're all used to them being here that they're part of the local landscape now.

I get inspired just as I am between sleeping and waking,
in the shower and
on walks.
